Most tanks today are steel lined with glass or porcelain and over time can oxidize and deteriorate. Most tanks will eventually leak – in some cases it will be a slow leak and in some cases it will be a more dramatic leak. For this reason it is a good idea to know where your dedicated water shutoff valve is located.

Although it is not common, there are homeowners that will see fifteen and in some cases twenty years of useful life from their water heater. Alghough, it is important to keep in mind, that although a water heater may still be working, most water heaters decrease in efficiency over time as sediment builds up inside the tank.

Tankless water heaters can last two to three times longer than a traditonal tank as long as the home owner cares for the tankless unit properly.

5 Ways to Help Prolong Your Water Heater's Useful Life
There are a few things that can extend your water heater’s life:

2nd anode rod: Installing a 2nd anode rod will greatly increase the life of your water heater. The anode rod is a sacrificial rod made of magnesium or aluminum that undergoes galvanic corrosion over time sacrificing itself and thereby preventing corrosion of the tank.

Expansion tank: If you are on a closed system, installing an expansion tank can potentially double the life of your water heater. When water is heated from 50º to 120º, it expands by approximately 2% (so a 50 gallon tank will produce 1 gallon of additional volume). If your system is closed (which means there is a valve which prevents your water from back flowing into the water main), this water has no where to go and because water is not a particularly compressible material, it will cause rapid increases and decreases in water pressure. This expanding and contracting causes stress on both your water heater and your plumbing system which can cause damage and premature failure.

Cleaning or flushing out your tank: For older tanks, flushing the tank out annually can help prevent sediment buildup and maintain higher efficiency of your tank for longer. Many newer model water heaters are self cleaning.

Installing a Pressure Regulating Valve or PRV: If you have very high water pressure above 90 PSI, your water pressure can damage your appliances and can also cause your water heater to fail prematurely. By installing a pressure regulating valve, system pressure is reduced; this also reduces wear and tear on all of your appliances. Keep in mind, if you have a PRV it’s also a good idea to install an expansion tank.

Water softeners: Some areas of the United States such as southern California and theSouthwestern United States have water with very high mineral content (often referred to as hard water). Hard water causes scaling which is a precipitation of minerals which deposits onto surfaces of an appliance. This can drastically reduce the life of a water heater. In many cases, installing a water softener can help reduce wear and tear on the plumbing system due to hard water.Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17129050443780353045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6185084292557344126.post-203409474427410282011-11-08T05:15:00.000-08:002011-11-08T05:15:16.192-08:00LPG (Propan liquid) vs Natural Gas Comparison

LPG (propane liquid) and Natural gas have same functionality, but they different in properties. This is brief explanation about their differences.

LPG

Primarily Propane

Liquify easy, so it can delivered everywhere inside tank as liquid

Better energy (2.5 x Natural gas)

Heavier than air

Natural Gas

Primarily Methane

Not easy to liquify, so it transport to houses via pipe from central provider.

Less energy compared to LPG

Lighter than air, so it less explosive risk.

If we talk about price, it can be vary on every country depending on availability. If you want to buy water heaters, you should know this because water heaters equipment need a spesific type of gas to operate.
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17129050443780353045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6185084292557344126.post-86631880765190883182011-11-05T03:21:00.000-07:002011-11-13T07:28:04.344-08:00Cost of Energy Efficient Water Heater Types Comparison

Many Water Heater Makers talk about efficiency, even goverment support for this through low tax on reducing energy consume. But sometime, the cost to have energy efficient equipment is still high. This article to cover about those things.

Imagine the time when there were no water heaters. When the freezing winter came, people either had to boil buckets of water before they could have a warm bath or skip bathing and use a lot of perfume to hide their stink! Thanks to modern technology, we no longer have to go through such an ordeal every year. No matter how cold or snowy the day is, we can always enjoy the luxury of a hot bath or warm steamy shower. All we need to do is turn on the faucet. That doesn't mean we should take this technology for granted, though. Do you know that about 20% of home energy use is attributed to water heating? There are approximately 80 million single-family homes in the U.S., and homeowners spend about $24 billion a year on water heating, releasing approximately 192 millions tons of carbon dioxide into the environment. If every household replaced their energy-wasting water heater with a high-efficiency version, each family would save hundreds of dollars per year while eliminating over 100 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. There will be more money in your wallet and more clean air to breathe. It is a win-win situation. If you want to make your home more eco-friendly, using an energy-efficient water heater is absolutely a great way to do it.

Types of Energy Efficient Water Heaters

However, the electric tankless models actually use a pretty high amount of energy to operate the instant demand systems, so they might not even save more energy than some high-efficiency tank water heaters. If you're determined to buy a tankless water heater, a gas model is a better option, since it usually costs much less to operate. The installation cost is another thing you should consider before deciding to go "tank or tankless." On average, the installation cost of a tank water heater is around $300 - $1000. As for the tankless models, it costs about $2500 - $4000 to install one. This number defines how much hot water the heater can provide during one hour of use. If its FHR doesn't exceed your household’s hot water usage during the peak hours, you'd better start looking for another water heater with a higher heating capacity. If you're buying a tankless water heater, find out whether its flow rates can handle your peak hot-water demand. Unfortunately, some tankless models can't supply adequate hot water for simultaneous uses, such as showers and laundry.

Efficiency and Operating Cost - Learn how much it approximately costs to run the heater and how much time it takes to heat up the water. In general, gas water heaters are more economical than electric models, because they usually require less heating time, and natural gas is much cheaper than electricity.

Installation Cost - Never forget to consider the installation cost. A water heater is not something you could just put anywhere you wish like a couch. Some high-technology models require specialized service which can be pretty costly. Some old-school plumbers whose low-cost service you have trusted for years might not be qualified to install them. To make sure you will be able to cover all the expenses, always add the installation cost to the purchase price before you buy.

Warranty Coverage - A high-efficiency water heater is a great product, yet it is by no means a perfect machine. When you think that you need to replace your water heater, there are not only the water heater it self to be consider. There are a lot more to know before we buy water heater and replace our old one. The best resource to know about these all things is via forum or social network where people usualy sharing their experiences. Here are some of people talk about their experiences :

If you want to replace a conventional heater with a tankless water heater it is much easier to do with electric than with gas. Continuous water heaters that are gas need special size vents and gas-lines which drives up your cost considerably. When I queried my plumber about this very thing he said that for my house to switch it would cost over $2,500.00 without even buying the water heater!

However, many sites recommend the gas over electric for whole house heating. This type of heater also cannot take on too many things at once. If you are doing a load of laundry then you might be able to take a shower at the same time but not run the dishwasher as well. If you get one of these units, look for a gas-fired model eligible for 2006-2007 federal tax credits, at least an Energy Factor (EF) of 0.80. (Marye Audet)

We've had a oil burner with a tankless water heater system since our house was built in 1993. We've only had one "major" repair, not bad for 15 years with very hard water. We have hot-water baseboard heat in the house, and this tankless heater supplies the hot water for everything - domestic and heating system. We live in Massachusetts, and the house stays as warm as we want it to all winter with this system.

Plusses & Minuses -
Plus: we never run out of hot water. A bunch of people can take showers in a row, then run the dishwasher and then the washing machine with no worries.

Minus: in the winter, if the heat is on and more than one person showers at the same time, both people end up with tepid showers. It's not an issue in the summer. --Lafalum84

There are two kinds of tankless hot water heaters. We have the kind that was installed in 1994 when we built this house and is actually part of our oil hot water heating system...no separate hot water heater.

However, there is another kind that is very energy efficient, but more expensive to install. It is a stand alone kind that is "on demand", has a reserve tank and is typically run by natural gas or propane. DH says that they are not oil run.

My husband says that since you have gas, it will be more energy efficient in the long term to get the new tankless type. It will be more expensive to install, but it is an "on demand" system. Some of them do have a smaller reserve tank.--thumper1

DH installed a tankless heater last summer and although I don't know a lot about them I do know that it saved us $$ on our gas bills. Since it's only the two of us and we don't use alot of hot water, it's been great not having to worry about running out of hot water when everyone is taking showers and doing dishes and laundry. --laxmomAdminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17129050443780353045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6185084292557344126.post-6733009134151711352011-11-04T15:14:00.000-07:002011-11-05T02:08:45.552-07:00Bosch 1600P Flow and Temperature Adjustment

The new Bosch 1600P that comes in either natural gas or liquid propane has a control knob for adjusting the flow and a slide adjustment for adjusting the heat on the front of the heater.
Traditional storage (tank) water heaters produce standby energy losses that cost you money. We do not leave our homes heated while vacationing. We only heat our homes when there is a demand for heat. In the same way, a Tankless Water Heater is used only when there is a demand for hot water.

How do Tankless Water Heaters work?
Tankless Water Heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. Therefore, they avoid the standby heat losses associated with storage water heaters. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. In an electric Tankless Water Heater an electric element heats the water. In a gas-fired Tankless Water Heater a gas burner heats the water. As a result, Tankless Water Heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don't need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water. Typically, Tankless Water Heaters provide hot water at a rate of 2 – 5 gallons (7.6 – 15.2 liters) per minute. Typically, gas-fired Tankless Water Heaters will produce higher flow rates than electric Tankless Water Heaters. Some smaller Tankless Water Heaters, however, cannot supply enough hot water for simultaneous, multiple uses in large households. For example, taking a shower and running the dishwasher at the same time can stretch a Tankless Water Heater to its limit. To overcome this problem, you can install a “whole house” type Tankless Water Heater or install two or more Tankless Water Heaters, connected in parallel for simultaneous demands of hot water. You can also install separate Tankless Water Heaters for appliances—such as a clothes washer or dishwater—that use a lot of hot water in your home.

Other applications for Tankless Water Heaters include the following:

Remote BBQ or outdoor sink

Poolhouse or pool shower

Remote bathrooms or hot tubs

To serve as a booster, eliminating long pipe runs, for solar water heating systems, dishwashers and sanitation.

For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, Tankless Water Heaters can be 24% – 34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. They can be 8% – 14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water, around 86 gallons per day. You can achieve an even greater energy savings of 27% – 50% if you install a Tankless Water Heater at each hot water outlet.

Before buying a Tankless Water Heater, consider the following:

Fuel Type

Location, Size and Demand

Application

1. Fuel Type

The first thing that you'll need to decide when selecting a Tankless Water Heater is the fuel type. You will need to select between an Electric Tankless Water Heater (like Eemax Tankless Water Heaters or Stiebel Eltron Tankless Water Heaters) or a Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heater (likeRheem Tankless Water Heaters).

You must ensure that you have a circuit or circuits that will support your Electric Tankless Water Heater. It may be necessary to put your Electric Tankless Water Heater on its own circuit or circuits.

You should consult with a qualified, licensed electrician for more information.

If you plan to purchase a Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heater, consider the Gas-Type and Venting Requirements:

You will first need to identify whether your gas type is Natural Gas or Propane. It is imperitive that you examine your current gas line to ensure that it will meet the requirments of your new Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heater. The requirements of the Tankless Water Heater may exceed that of your existing tank-style water heater.

Next, you will need to consider venting requirements for your specific installation scenario. There are a few important things to keep in mind when purchasing the gas venting accessories for your Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heater.

Be sure that you purchase Category III stainless steel (UL1738 certified) venting for your Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heater. "Type B" venting accessories are not acceptable. Also, be sure to check local building code to ensure that your specific needs will be completely met.

Additionally, many Tankless Water Heater manufacturers offer gas venting "kits". It is recommended that customers evaluate the needs of their specific installation to ensure that they will be getting all of the necessary gas venting accessories. Depending on where you will be installing the Tankless Water Heater, a pre-made kit will probably not meet your needs. Ensure that you measure out the vent route and consider where the discharge will go through the wall or ceiling, consider the necessary clearances, and consider ample access to air for combustion, then buy the appropriate gas venting pieces. *Note: Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heaters may still require a minimal electrical connection. Be sure to review installation requirements for the units you are considering for purchase.

2. Location, Size, and Demand

When deciding which Tankless Water Heater to purchase, you will also need to consider where you will need hot water. Are you looking for a unit that will heat the water at one bathroom sink (single point application), an entire bathroom (multipoint application), or an entire house, apartment, or condo (whole house application)? It is important to recognize the number of fixtures that will require hot water. Each fixture will have its own demands. The chart below illustrates the typical flow rates (demand) for some standard fixtures:

Typical Flow Rates in Gallons per Minute (gpm)

The flow rate is especially important, since Tankless Water Heaters will generate a temperature rise based on the flow rate demanded.

For example, a Stiebel Eltron Tempra 12, running on 240 Volt power, will raise the water temperature by 54°F at 1.5 gpm, 36°F at 2.25 gpm, and 27°F at 3.0 gpm, above the ambient incoming water temperature, up to 125°F.

A larger unit, like the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36, running on 240 Volt power, will raise the water temperature by 92°F at 1.5 gpm, 92°F at 2.25 gpm, and 82°F at 3.0 gpm, above the ambient incoming water temperature, up to 125°F.

Temperature Rise Based on Flow Rate, Up to 125°F

This means that if you are using a 1.5 gpm shower and a 1.5 gpm kitchen sink simultaneously, a total demand of 3.0 gpm, the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 12 will raise the temperature 27°F, whereas the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 will raise the temperature 82°F.
Next, you should look at your ambient incoming water temperature. If you live in a cold climate, like New York, your incoming water temperature will likely be much lower than if you live in a warm climate, like Florida. Your best bet is to find out how much temperature rise you will need in order for your hot water to reach the desired heat. If the ambient incoming water temperature for your shower is 65°F, you are using a 2.0 gpm shower, and you want to raise that temperature to 115°F, you will want to look for a Tankless Water Heater that will provide at least a 50°F temperature rise at 2.0 gpm (115°F - 65°F = 50°F). However, if you anticipate additional simultaneous demand, such as the hot water from a sink being used while someone is showering, you will need to add the sink's gpm to the shower's gpm in order to determine your overall gpm demand and then find the temperature rise necessary to meet your overall needs.
Proper installation and maintenance of your Tankless Water Heater can optimize its energy efficiency. Proper installation depends on many factors. These factors include climate and local building code requirements. You should have a qualified, licensed plumbing and heating contractor install your Tankless Water Heater.

Do the following when selecting a contractor:

Request cost estimates in writing

Ask for references

Check the company with your local Better Business Bureau

Confirm the company will obtain a local permit, if necessary, and understands local building codes

Be sure you contractor first consults the manufacturer’s installation and instruction materials. Manufacturers usually provide the necessary installation and instruction manuals with the product. Your contractor should also contact your municipality for information about obtaining a permit, if necessary, and about local water heater installation codes.

Many Tankless Water Heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years. In contrast, storage water heaters last 10 – 15 years.

You should consult the manufacturer's website or literature, such as the manual, for detailed warranty information.

Periodic water heater maintenance can significantly extend your water heater's life and minimize loss of efficiency. Read your owner's manual for specific maintenance recommendations.
Each have their own benefit, so there are no best for all kind of purpose.

Gas Water Heater
Gas water heater is the most used. It efficient and low cost. Gas water heater is best for medium to large home which need more warm water to serve imediately. It also the most choosen type on sub tropic area such as US, UK, etc.

Electric Water Heater
It's more compact but need higher energy cost to operate, so it only suit for small usage. If it only used for shower or other temporary task, it will be great choice because it operate instantly quick and turn off quick also.

Solar Cell Water Heater
This is the most economical way to produce warm water, but it only suit for tropical country where sun mostly shine all day. So this kind of water heater is not reliable for most countries which need water heater badly :).. you know what i mean.Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17129050443780353045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6185084292557344126.post-90358105118526187412011-11-01T01:21:00.000-07:002011-11-10T09:14:37.525-08:00How Water Heater with Tank Storage WorkIf you know the concept, it's easier for you to fix some problem. You know also, which brands are the best suit based on you need, and many others benefit will arise if you know this.

Fundamentally, a water heater is an appliance that converts energy to heat and transfers that heat to water. It’s connected to a cold water supply pipe and has an outgoing hot water pipe—or system of pipes—that supplies heated water to one or more faucets and appliances.

A storage water heater stores heated water in a cylindrical tank. The less common tankless water heater doesn’t store water but rather routes heated water straight to taps or appliances.

The majority of water heaters are fueled by natural gas, though propane-fueled and electric water heaters are not unusual. Where natural gas is available, it is a much less expensive energy source than electricity.

Small “instant hot water dispensers” are simply miniature electric water heaters that serve only one faucet. They have a small, under-sink tank that heats and holds nearly boiling (about 190 degree F.) water and delivers it under low pressure through a separate sink-top spout.

A gas-fueled storage water heater heats water by means of a burner beneath the tank. Natural gas (or propane or kerosene, in some cases) is piped to a gas valve. A thermostat that detects the temperature of water in the tank regulates fuel delivery to the burner, which is ignited by a pilot light or spark ignition. A vent collects toxic emissions from the burner and pipes them up through the tank, out the top, and normally up through the roof. Some newer, high-efficiency water heaters have fan-assisted vents that can be piped out through a wall.

Because the tank is under pressure, hot water exits through the hot water outlet at the top. When the hot water leaves, cold water enters through a diffuser dip tube that extends down inside the tank. The cold water pipe normally has a shutoff valve. A magnesium or aluminum anode rod utilizes the principle of ionization to minimize the water’s corrosive elements, which can significantly shorten tank life. The larger the anode, the longer a tank is likely to last.

The drain valve at the water heater’s base is used for draining the tank or flushing sediment out of it. This important maintenance step should be done once or twice a year, according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

A temperature-pressure (TP) relief valve near or on the top of the tank opens automtically if temperature or pressure exceed safe levels. This valve should be tested at the same time the tank is drained, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

With an electric water heater, a heavy electrical cable delivers energy to heating elements. An electric water heater doesn’t create combustion gases, so no vent is required. It typically has one 5,500-watt or, for faster heating, two 4,500-watt elements. Separate thermostats control each element, cycling on and off as needed.
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17129050443780353045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6185084292557344126.post-46320159675332989412011-11-01T01:08:00.000-07:002011-11-01T01:08:34.548-07:00General Water Heater Tips to Gain Best Advantages

Set the temperature control to about 150 degrees F. or lower if you have no dishwasher or if you have small children or elderly people in the home who might scald themselves.

To minimize the energy it takes to heat the water, insulate your water pipes if they run a long way from your heater to your faucets. Also consider installing a point-of-use water heater.

Periodically check the temperature-pressure relief valve, which keeps pressure in the boiler from building up too much. Lift or lower its lever on this valve. Water should drain from the overflow pipe.

Rinnai and Bosch offer a lifetime of 10 to 22 years and have excellent warranty on the appliance, labor and parts. Rinnai controls the water temperature with a digital control pad, while Bosch uses a wireless remote control. Both are also eco-friendly as these brands are synonymous to low NOx and CO2 greenhouse gases emission. Both are also entitled for energy tax credits and local rebates.

While Rinnai and Bosch appear to share many similarities, reviewers also take note of differences in features. Bosch has a higher minimum flow rate which means you’ll need more water running out the faucet before the heater would turn on. This could be a problem in areas with colder climate where starting temperature is lower as water wouldn’t be hot for minor usage like shaving or washing the face. Bosch water heaters also have lower flow rate of 3.6 to 7.2 gmp compared with Rinnai units that offer 8 to 9.8 gpm. Rinnai vs Bosch, Rinnai is the better choice when it comes to performance.

Bosch’s biggest advantage is its incredible 15 year warranty on heat exchanger. Rinnai only offers a maximum of 5 years on heat exchangers and all other parts. Bosch also manufactures electric tankless water heaters for homes that are not connected to natural gas or propane. Rinnai doesn’t make an electric model due to large power requirement and high operating cost. Bosch water heaters are also considerably cheaper than Rinnai. Bosch wins in these aspects.

Indeed, with so many brands out in the market, it’s not easy to choose a tankless water heater. Rinnai vs Bosch, Rinnai seems to offer better quality and has more features. But in the end, the decision on which is the better brand is still up to your budget and requirements.

Rinnai vs Noritz
Rinnai and Noritz water heaters seem to share many common features. Both are Japanese brands. All units of Noritz and Rinnai are Energy Star qualified and have burners that emit low amount of CO2 and NOx gases. Rinnai and Noritz are equipped with digital control pad and remote controllers for water temperature adjustment. Both brands offer an excellent 12-year warranty. These brands are eligible for federal energy tax credit. Rinnai and Noritz also save space in your house. If you will look at it first glance, it seems like they are just the same. However, the reviewers discovered more.

Reviews and specifications, however, reveal that Rinnai vs. Noritz, the former has more features than the latter. Rinnai utilizes single flame burners, while Noritz is equipped with dual flame burners. Though at first it would look like Noritz is favorable, nevertheless Rinnai conserves more energy and that’s what customers look for nowadays. Just the same as Noritz’ dual flame burners, it also provides water temperature stability. When it comes to heat exchanger, Rinnai is made up of commercial grade copper that most reviewers love.

In addition, Rinnai tankless water heaters offer 8 to 9.8 gpm flow rate which receive much attention. Rinnai’s advantage is clearly seen since it offers more condensing tankless water heater models of different sizes and of different capacity for indoor and outdoor installation. Noritz lack this, no doubt, more users favor Rinnai because it can easily adapt to their specific need. Rinnai water heater units are also slightly cheaper than Noritz water heater units. Of course, price matters nowadays because of hard economic times. Additionally, some reviewers also praise Rinnai for being quieter than Noritz units.

Rinnai vs Rheem
Rinnai tankless water heaters are highly recommended by its users to someone who plans to have or upgrade his water heater. Consumers says that they never run out of water and it is such a blessing to have this especially during the winter months where they can have longer time for showers, and there’s a lot to wash around the house. Some users also claim that they were able to save on electric bill upon using this product because Rinnai water heaters are energy-efficient. Rinnai users are satisfied with the products that they believe that Rinnai is the number 1 product ever.

Thus, the competition between Rinnai VS Rheem continued. Both offers heating and cooling equipment, water heating, tankless water heating, pool and spa heating, solar water heating, home generators, indoor air quality and other commercial products. While Rheem users claims otherwise that the tankless water heaters from Rheem are innovative, energy efficient water heating which is the best product for today’s modern homes. Loyal Rheem users believe that these products are better than Rinnai.

If you are a consumer who is confused on which of the two brands to take might as well consider the area you are living in and your expectations about how well the products work to be satisfied in using either of the two brands. It depends if your water quality is great or you need to clean the mineral deposits from it.

And also another consideration is the size of the tank; you need a bigger water tank if there will be multiple things running or small if you have little consumption. These brands requires a large gas supply so you may need to upgrade your service and the fuel pipe which is expensive and it will be more hassle if you need to vent it outside.

Among the two brands Rinnai had been a strong advocate of its energy efficient product compared with the Rheem brand. Rinnai had been awarded by Super Nova Star Award to the company’s continued efforts in keeping alliance to save energy. They are also in continued support for go green programs especially on Earth days.Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17129050443780353045noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6185084292557344126.post-32185777358867969772011-10-31T11:07:00.000-07:002011-10-31T11:07:16.322-07:00Gas Tankless Water Heater Brands Compared
Gas Tankless Water Heater Comparison Table
